The Idea of the Holiday
Free Comic Book Day was created by Joe Field, a comic book shop owner in California, in 2002. He came up with the idea of a holiday to attract new readers and maintain interest in this genre.
How the Holiday Is Held
Comic Book Distribution. Participants can get free comics at participating stores. These are both classic editions and new issues prepared especially for this event.
In-store events. Autograph sessions with authors, artists, and creators of comics.
Cosplay shows, where fans come dressed as their favorite characters.
Lotteries, games, and themed events.
Online promotions. Many publishers and stores offer discounts and exclusive materials through their websites.
